Dear Rocka readers,
Welcome to July’s Rocka Mag Recap.
☆☆☆
This month I split “Fries and Wings” with Philly-duo Rubber, had really strange LA show experiences, and got to catch up with Rocka Mag vet: Cece Coakley.
I’m not sure how I came across Rubber, but it was a few years ago now. We had an interview scheduled but things fell through. I forgot about them until I was sent their newest single “Fries and Wings” and was reminded of how talented the duo is. It was surprising to hear that neither is professionally trained (despite very much sounding like it), nor did they study music when they met in college. They have a unique chemistry and style that I can really see growing in the coming years. I was thrilled to finally add them to my roster. Read the feature here.

I have to be careful with how much I share now because when I move back to Michigan this fall, I’ll have much less to write about and will have to rely on this summer’s reserve of content. But for now, I’ll provide a summary of phrases with no elaboration.
Helping Charity Kiss shower
Almost getting mauled at Vundabar
Private Chika show
Bleachers gives Christian rock vibes but in the best way
“Clubbing” to indie music is the new core of my identity
I should probably start wearing earplugs before I’m deaf by age 25.

The second piece I got to work on this month was with Cece Coakley. She released her debut EP, “Tender",and it is a beautiful first collection. We chatted about TikTok, desire in a modern context, and how things change so quickly. Catching up after a few years was crazy, since we were both in high school the last time we spoke. I’m really proud of all that she’s done thus far and can’t wait to see and hear how she evolves. You can read the piece here.

This month’s playlist is an honest compilation of songs I’ve had on repeat. It’s a mix of rap, female vocalists, and some rock. The spotlight track is a lil one by LA group, The War Toys. “I Don’t Care” feels like you’re in a movie getting ready to go to a party and then last minute you decide to put blue eyeliner on or wear something weird. It’s so lively. Here’s my July mix.

Rocka Mag merch is coming this fall! I’m working out the details of selling and shipping and then the first batch will be up for sale. If there’s a certain piece of merch you’d like to see, feel free to let me know. I’m always looking for more creative ideas.
I’m planning on doing one monthly recap and then one story piece on here a month, so if you’re interested in that, plug your email in & make sure I don’t end up in your spam folder. If you’re a Rocka artist and want info to be included in next month’s newsletter, email/dm me. Follow Rocka on socials (@rockamag) for my shit-posting and occasional thoughtful pieces.
Rocka out,
Alexandra
